excerpt from John Piper Sermon - 05-03-1998 - Romans 1:1-4

"The gospel is about God. It's God's gospel. God is eternal, God is infinite, God is glorious, God is THE reality in the universe. And he has a Son who has always existed, who has never come into being, but has always been eternally begotten by the Father's imaging forth of himself. These magnificent unspeakably great, weighty realities are in the gospel. We must let it rest upon us. Unless we become a trivial people, a flippant people. I've been in meetings recently, where I've just groaned that leaders feel they always have to be funny. They always have to be funny. They might be inaugurating something, they could be introducing a weghty topic, they might be thanking someone for long periods of service, and they just constantly have to tell jokes. It's so sad! The gospel is a glorious and weighty thing. Slapstick and gospel don't blend!"
